What is Pilates

Pilates is a safe form of exercise that can dramatically transform the way your body performs, looks and feels with the use of equipment or floor exercises. It was developed in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates and emphasizes the development of "core" muscles that are closest to the spine.

The exercises are dynamic and develop strength while simultaneously increasing flexibility. Quality and precise movement are valued over quantity. Pilates is designed to condition the whole body and to improve posture and alignment. While the focus is on the core, you will strengthen and stretch each part of the body: front, back, sides, hips and shoulders.

The Pilates approach develops strong muscles that are long, lean and flexible. This in turn leads to a more balanced body less prone to injury. Both men and women can benefit from Pilates. The practice will increase your flexibility and improve your understanding of your own body so that you can do the things you enjoy more safely. Whether you are a seated office worker, casual gardener or athlete, training your body from the inside out will help you move with more comfort and ease.
